Acetoacetate

CH3 ·CO·CH2 ·COO– , one of the three ketone bodies (acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate and acetone) produced in the incomplete oxidation of fatty acids. In the liver, fatty acids, via their metabolism to acetyl-coenzyme A, can produce acetoacetylcoenzyme A which in turn can be converted to the other two ketone bodies. Acetoacetate and β-hydroxybutyrate can be taken up by other tissues and used for energy.
