Canals shorten the travelling distance of ships. They mostly connect two rivers with each other, sometimes also two seas. Some famous examples are Suez Canal in Egypt, the Panama Canal in the United States, and the Kiel Canal in Germany. None of the three canals are very long, but their construction made a major difference in the routes earlier taken by many ships and in the duration of their journeys. In fact, it is a welcome change because transport by ship Canals is very economical.
