How big can a passenger ship be?

The small passenger ships are found in rivers and lakes, while the huge ones are seen travelling only in occans. Freedom of the seas, which entered service in April 2006, is the largest known passenger ship. It is 340 m long, 56 m wide, and can accommodate almost 4400 passengers. This giant surpassed Queen Mary 2, which is 6 m longer, regarding the number of beds. Till the middle of the 20th century, passenger ships travelled regularly between Europe and America. However, travel by aircraft soon gained in popularity as it was much faster; passenger ships are now mainly used for cruises and pleasure trips.
