The 162-km long Suez Canal was built in Egypt under the leadership of Ferdinand de Lesseps, who laid the foundation for the Suez Canal Company. Opened in 1869, it connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea and offers a shorter route to Asia than the ones earlier taken by ships; thanks to this new canal, there was no longer any lead to take the longer roundabout route along the coast of South Africa.
