The longest canal in the world is the Emperor Canal in China. It is also known as the Great Canal and is about 1800 km long. In china, while all the big rivers flow from the west to the east, the north-south connection is provided by the Emperor Canal. The first section of the canal near the mouth of River Yangtze-Kiang was built as early as the 5th century BC. By the end of the 13th century, the canal reached Peking, which was its final destination. The difference in height between the two end points of the canal was initially compensated with the help of ramps and waterslide. Later, sluices were invented and integrated within the structure of the canal.
