Since when do we have taxis?

The word 'taxi' is derived form the word 'taxameter', a device installed in the vehicle to measure the distance covered by the vehicle and to calculate the fare from it. 'Taxi', the short form of the word, was finally passed on to the cars meant for public transport, which, till then, were called 'hackney carriages' or simply 'hackneys'. The horse carriages introduced in Berlin in 1811 were also equipped with meters. One can therefore say that we have taxis since 1811, although the modern version in the form of the petrol-driven car was introduced only much later, around 1930.
