Why does Venice has a large number of canals?

The canals in Venice were not built, but were formed naturally. They are actually water channels dividing small islands, on which houses have come up. Venice lies in a lagoon, which is a shallow water body separated from the sea by large deposits of send. About one-ninth of the Venice lagoon consists of water that runs through numerous canals and forms a network of waterways. Since the 11th century, people have used these canals for travel and transportation of goods. Earlier, the most popular means of transport were the famous Venetian gondolas. Today, they have been largely replaces by motorboats and water buses, which are locally known as 'vaporetti'.
