Rail transport has many advantages. The friction of wheels on rails is low, a large number of wagons can be connected to form a single goods train, and the risk of accidents is low. The first precursors of the rails were the stone runways built by the ancient Romans to increase the speed of chariots. Over the centuries, the passage of wheels bore deep grooves in these runways. The first regular passenger train was flagged off almost 300 years later. Shortly thereafter, a railway network was built all across North America.
