Actin

     A water-soluble protein (molecular weight 43,000) containing 376 amino acids. It is found in muscle and other tissues with motile function. It provides the thin filam ment backbone and combines with myosin to produce muscle contraction in the presence of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Actin is the second most abundant protein in muscle, making up 10% of the total protein.
