Diamonds are formed deep inside the Earth and are mostly brought to the surface along with volcanic stones during eruptions. In Africa, there are many volcanic vents, such as those in Botswana, South Africa, and Zambia, which contain diamonds. The craze for diamonds began in 1869 in the small South African city of Kimberley, when several diamonds were found in one volcanic stone-volcanic stones rich in diamonds were called 'kimberlites'. Cecil Rhodes, the British founder of Rhodes, the British founder of Rhodesia (today Zimbabwe), acquired mining rights in South Africa and made a huge fortune through diamond mining. The company established by him, De Beers, rules the global diamond trade even today.
