Bionics-learning from nature

Bionics, a newly coined term, refers to a stream of engineering the studies natural phenomena as models for conducting scientific and technological activities. In this new stream of research, scientists observe and take ideas from nature and convert them into technical reality. The latest type of swimming suits, which have fine longitudinal grooves and resemble that skin of sharks, is an example of bionic engineering. The grooves reduce friction between water and the skin and thus minimizes turbulence and swirling in the water flow during swimming. As a result, the swimmer-just as the shark-swims fast and easy.
