Why is our galaxy called the 'Milky Way'?

There are many stories about how the name 'Milky Way' was given. One of these goes back to the old Greeks, who thought that the light band in the sky looked like spilled milk. According to a Greek legend, the goddess Hera was suckling young Heracles. When she realized that he was not her son, she pulled him away and the milk form her breasts flowed among the stars. The Greeks called the light band 'galaxy' because the word 'gala' in Greek means 'milk'. This gave rise to the term 'Milky Way'. Our home galaxy is a spiral galaxy. Since the Earth is a part of this galaxy, we do not view the spiral from top, but can see the billions of stars including the sun of the spiral arm, as a white band.
